The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain - 804 Words
Conor Fleming The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Ignorance The Novel: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, makes a strong presence by its continued, if not redundant display of itself. Far too often in society people s lack of knowledge on a given subject causes their opinions and actions to rely strictly on stereotypes created by the masses and often makes the people not willing to change how they view a certain people or situation. This is usually called ignorance, and it plaques societies everywhere and Mark Twain knows that and actively criticizes that. This is curable but people have to become open-minded and leave their reliance on society s viewpoints behind them, which is unlikely to happen when people areâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Society would sees a black person, and even further, slaves, as inferior and wouldnt even consider them as a person. They never thought of slaves as human beings, only as property. A slave, such as Jim, could be what society considers a great person, but since he is a slave who he actual ly was would become irrelevant.. They have the knowledge that Jim is a slave but make no judgments on his personality. This is shown when they assume that Jim killed Huck just because he ran away near the time of Huck s death. They don t consider the motives of such an action, but just look at the surface facts that he might do this because he is savage, missing, and possibly in the area at the time. Pap is also suspected, but not as much as Jim even though he has a motive, and could have easily committed such an evil deed in one of his drunken stupors Again, the main members of a society aren t the only ignorant party. Jim can be awfully ignorant, this can be shown when he is speaking. What s de use er makin up de camp fire to cook strawbries en sich truck? But you got a gun, hain t you? Den we kin git sumfn better den strawbries. (Twain 51). In another part of the novel the Twain illustrates the ignorance of society very well with the feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepardsons. When Buck Grangerford was questioned about why he shot at Harvey Shepardson he first exclaims in

The companyââ¬â¢s standards of excellence mandate that it serves only the freshest, high-quality seafood. It guarantees the quality by buying only the ââ¬Å"top of the catchâ⬠fish daily. Although Legal Sea Foods tries to make available the widest variety every day, certain species of fish are subject to migratory patterns and are not always present in New England waters. Weather conditions may also prevent local fishermen from fishing in certain areas. Freshly caught fish are rushed to the companyââ¬â¢s quality control center where they cut and filleted in an environmentally controlled state-of-the-art facility. All shellfish come from government-certified beds and are tested in an in-house microbiology laboratory for wholesomeness and purity. There are even special lobster storage tanks so that all lobsters are held under optimum conditions, in clean, pollution free water. Every seafood item is inspected for quality eight separate times before it reaches the table. At Legal Sea Foodsââ¬â¢ restaurants, each meal is cooked to order. Even though servers make every effort to deliver all meals within minutes of each other, they will not jeopardize the quality of an item by holding it beneath a heat lamp until the entire order is ready. The service staff is trained to work as a team for better service. More than one service person frequently delivers food to a table. When any item is ready, the closest available person serves it. Customer questions can be directed to any employee, not just the person who took the order. b. Suggest a set of CTQââ¬â¢s for Legal Sea Food customers. Some Critical to Quality metrics are the time it takes for the customer to place their order up until their order is finished and brought out to them. Another CTQ could be whether or not a shipment of fish arrives on time. Along with arriving on time, the quality of the fish must be at the highest level to ensure customer satisfaction. Another CTQ metric could be the responsiveness of the waiting staff and the awareness of needy customers. The pricing of the fish and the meals are both CTQ metrics that will affect sales.

In Truman Capoteââ¬â¢s novel, In Cold Blood, the role of Richard ââ¬Å"Dickâ⬠Hickock as an iconic character provides In Cold Blood with a more dramatic and artificial story line, that supports the overall theme of living the ââ¬Å"American Dream. â⬠Richard Hickock, better known as Dick, was portrayed as the mastermind of everything that he and Perry did throughout the story. One may comprehend from the story that it was Dickââ¬â¢s idea to murder the Clutters, pass the fake checks, and commit the other criminal activates that the two men partook in. We will write a custom essay sample on In Cold Blood or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Capoteââ¬â¢s use of personality gives the reader a sense of what Dickââ¬â¢s main motive was throughout the story. Dick states that I know it is wrong when we started too. After reading this, one may begin to realize that Dick knew right from wrong and could not control his actions because thats who he was. Capotes use of this statement provides the readers with the knowledge that Dick was ashamed of his actions and was willing to hurt others to live out his dream. Dick killed the Clutters for money, passed fake checks for money, and traveled looking for jobs all so that he could live a peaceful life. He wanted to live the American dream. Without Capoteââ¬â¢s use and characteristics that Dick portrayed, one may not have quite comprehended the overall message of In Cold Blood to live the American dream as the Clutters had been doing. In addition, on numerous accounts throughout the story Dick can be perceived as being very manipulative and taking advantage of Perry. Through Dickââ¬â¢s actions and tone, Capote gives the reader a understanding that Dick had more control over Perry. As the book progresses, the two men continue to travel with each other in search for a fantasy-like place for them to stay. As they travel, Dickââ¬â¢s tone is very serious with Perry and his actions and thought process dictate what the both of them do. One may believe that Capote wrote the novel and portrayed Dick this way for one to relate his actions to real society. In todayââ¬â¢s modern society, people will steal from others and do just about anything to earn money, just as Dick had, to be able to become rich and live the American Dream. In conclusion, Truman Capoteââ¬â¢s use of Dick as a character gave the reader a clear understanding of his motives and drive towards living the American Dream. Living the American Dream is not always an easy journey but sometimes you may hurt others, backstab people you love and go the extra mile to achieve what you want. As Henry Thoreau stated ââ¬Å"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. â⬠Just as Dick believed that killing the Clutters was part of his pathway towards living the American Dream, little did he know he would die trying to live that dream and thatââ¬â¢s what makes him an iconic character.

ADULT DEV CASE3 Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
ADULT DEV CASE3 - Research Paper Example Shreeve (2008) presented literature on educational models that are designed to solicit active participation from learners. The lecture-based learning (LBL) is the conventional method wherein information are conveyed through lecture and objective examinations (Shreeve, 2008). Critics of LBL presented that most students does not exhibit true learning, instead, they are more concerned on passing the objective examinations (Shreeve, 2008). On the other hand, adult-based learning (ABL) serves the purpose of imparting knowledge based on the adultââ¬â¢s need (Shreeve, 2008). Through recognition of the relevance of the topic to their lives, the adult learner can be more diligent in studying (ââ¬Å"Adult Learningâ⬠). Another model cited by Shreeve (2008) is the problem-based learning (PBL), wherein the emphasis is on the adults as participants. In this model, the teacher acts as a simple coordinator, while the students are the ones responsible for initiating, diagnosing and concludin g the discussions (Shreeve, 2008). While the three models mentioned mostly dealt with people discussions and lectures, another model has its foundation based on experience. A Professor of Organizational Behavior, David Kolb formed experiential learning theory (ELT) in consideration to the works of renowned theorists Piaget, Dewey, and Lewin (Smith, 2001). ELT highlights the learnerââ¬â¢s experience instead of focusing on the instructor (Shreeve, 2008). Another educational model which is relatively new, as described by Shreeve (2008) is Appreciative Inquiry (AI). In this method, a cycle is implemented wherein the learners are entitled to participate in a discussion. This method closely resembles PBL and ELT, the difference is that AI is leaned more on the positive side of every discussion (Shreeve, 2008). It also identifies the past and is more focused on developing potentials. Through examination of all educational models,

Challenging Behavior Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words
Challenging Behavior - Essay Example Special Educational Needs (SEN) Policy: The Special Educational Needs Policy is the backbone of the policy framework of Hampshire County Council. It serves as a key element for supporting and catering to the needs of children and adolescents between the ages of 0-19 (Hampshire County Council, 2009, p.1-9.). Main Priorities: The main priorities indicated by the policy are the formation of a safer and securer environment of Hampshire for all citizens, the enhancement of the quality of services being provided, responding effectively to the improvements the community wants, meeting the demands of the local people, and maximising well-being and prosperity in the community. SEN provisions of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act takes account for the appeal of rights of children with special educational needs to study in mainstream schools, a right for nursery education providers, educational institutes to request a statutory evaluation, and assessment of a child and achievement of substantial acts, to ensure the arrangements to provide the parents of children with SEN with services offering advice and necessary information as a means to resolve and refute disputes by enforcing LEA duties. It is a sign of popularity of the policy amongst the community that it has been revised for the period of 2009-2012. This revised policy is responsive to certain changes whilst ensuring that the local authorities fulfil the duties and responsibilities required by the SEN and Disability Act 2001, and improve its standards of quality service provided (Department of Health, 2005, p.2-24). The revised policy focuses upon the progress made by children and young people from their birth to adulthood, in pre-school settings and in schools, and the promotion of their well-being, learning, and achievements. Aims and Objectives: The policy aims to improve and maintain the quality of provision for children with special educational needs wherever it is delivered. It is also striving to recognise further that schools and supporting services collectively provide for the needs of all children in the community. Operating effective assessment systems as early as possible in conjunction and collaboration with other agencies is another objective which has to be reached. Other important aims of the policy include allocation and usage of resources effectively and equitably in an efficient manner, and to assure that partnerships and associations with children, parents/carers and other stakeholders, work effectively (Hampshire County Council, 2009, p.1-9). Mentioned above is the rationale and achievements of SEN, but the following conclusions are obtained on the critical analysis of SEN: Methods: The methodology used involves a review of the related previous literature, a thorough study of the old and revised policies of SEN, Interviews with experts on field and conduction of case studies and surveys. Findings and Recommendations: SEN System lacks in addressing the inacce ssibility of the services to the parents of children with behaviour issues. The parents have to face many challenges in getting the right support for their children. The conflict amongst the local authorities and delay in services has resulted in the undermining of confidence of people. The revised policy is concentrated on the children in the Hampshire County only; the children from other areas are not receiving these privileges and the emphasis on the collaboration of
